January 29: National Day of Remembrance of the Québec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia
As we prepare for Isha prayers tonight, we remember our 6 brothers who lost their lives 8 years ago after praying in their mosque in Québec City on January 29, 2017.
Ibrahima Barry. Mamadou Tanou Barry. Khaled Belkacemi. Aboubaker Thabti. Abdelkrim Hassane. Azzedine Soufiane.
May Allah grant them all Jannah, bless their families with patience, and protect all Canadians.
After Maghrib prayers at PIC our Imam, Mufti Abdulmannan, reminded us about the significance of today, and encouraged us to pray for the victims above as well as those who were injured and their families. He also called on us to speak out against and report any acts of hate or discrimination that you may experience or observe. And lastly, we should be aware, take precautions, and watch out for each other, recognizing that Allah is the ultimate source of protection.
Earlier today the Mayor of Pickering Kevin Ashe issued a statement honouring the memory of those we lost, and reaffirming his commitment to fight Islamophobia, hate, and discrimination. We appreciate his message, and will continue to work with the City to build positive relationships rooted in peace and understanding.
